If your little reader sometimes looks at a book like it is written in an alien language, or if you are just keen to help them get a smoother start, the Port Macquarie library has something interesting brewing. On Saturday 26 July 2025, they are having a low key event to launch a brand new collection of decodable readers. These are special books designed to make reading a bit less of a head scratcher for kids who might be dyslexic, finding reading a bit tough, or just taking their very first literary steps. Think of it as a helping hand in paperback form.
Beyond simply showing off the new additions, there will also be a chance to hear from a panel of local folks who know a thing or two about navigating the world of dyslexia and literacy. You can listen in on discussions about decodable readers, what dyslexia is all about, and where to find helpful pointers for the journey. Kelly King from Dyslexia MNC / SPELD NSW, Jess Manton from Specialist Education Services, and Blake, a local Youth Ambassador, are planning to share some insights. It is all happening from 11am until 12:30pm at the library on 32 Grant Street, and while it will not cost you a cent to pop along, you will need to register your spot beforehand.
