If you have ever wondered about the nitty gritty financial squabbles of yesteryear, particularly the ones that were just too tiny to ignore, then you might be interested in a talk happening at the Port Macquarie Library. On Tuesday, August 12, starting at 11 am, Museums of History NSW will be on hand to chat about something called the Small Debts Registers. Think of it as vintage financial drama, where even a few pennies could lead to someone's name ending up in the official records. They will be giving a presentation and you will even get to peek at some of the original documents, which is probably less thrilling than it sounds unless you are deeply into historical ledger paper.
This whole shindig is part of their Archives for Everyone project, which basically means they are taking all these old, detailed records of minor financial woes and making them searchable online from the comfort of your own abode. Apparently, the Port Macquarie and Districts Family History Society Inc. were the original trailblazers in this particular line of historical sleuthing, being the first to digitise one of these registers, so you could say the idea sort of began here. It is a free event, but you will need to register if you plan on dropping by for a listen. It wraps up around 12:30 pm.
